If you’re looking for self storage near Lucan, Palmerstown or Ballyfermot, the nearest modern facility for many households is Stow Self Storage on Ninth Lock Road in Clondalkin, Dublin 22. Lucan, Palmerstown and Ballyfermot are all just a few kilometres from Clondalkin, and for most people the drive takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes outside rush hour, using the N4, the M50 or the local roads that link West Dublin together.
A lot of people in Dublin 20, Dublin 10 and Lucan assume they’ll have to go into the city or way out along the motorway to find a storage unit. In reality, Clondalkin sits right in the middle of them. This guide explains how to get to us from each area, what people locally use storage for, and what to look for when choosing a unit.
Where is the nearest self storage to Lucan?
For many parts of Lucan, including Lucan village, Esker, Griffeen, Balgaddy, Adamstown and the estates off the Newcastle Road, Stow in Clondalkin is one of the closest storage facilities. Depending on where you start, you can come south via the Outer Ring Road (R136), down the Fonthill Road from Liffey Valley, or across through Clondalkin from Adamstown and Clonburris.
Typical drive times outside peak traffic:
- Adamstown and Clonburris: about 10 minutes
- Griffeen, Esker and Balgaddy: about 10 minutes
- Lucan village: about 12 to 15 minutes
- Liffey Valley: about 10 minutes via the Fonthill Road
Lucan has grown enormously over the past two decades, and much of that growth has been in apartments and newer houses that don’t come with a garage or much attic space. That’s exactly why so many Lucan households end up looking for storage when life changes: a new baby, someone working from home, a renovation, or a move.
Self storage near Palmerstown (Dublin 20)
Palmerstown sits right beside the N4 and the M50, which makes it very easy to get to Clondalkin. Head west on the N4 towards Liffey Valley, then come south down the Fonthill Road into Clondalkin. Outside rush hour that’s usually 10 to 15 minutes.
If you’re coming from the Chapelizod side or the lower part of Palmerstown, you can also come around via the M50 southbound and in from the N7 side. Either way, you’re not going anywhere near the city centre.
Storage units near Ballyfermot (Dublin 10)
Ballyfermot is closer to Clondalkin than most people realise. Heading west through Cherry Orchard brings you towards Clondalkin quickly, and most journeys take about 10 to 15 minutes outside peak times. It’s a very manageable run for a car loaded with boxes, or a hired van on moving day.
For many Ballyfermot residents, particularly in older houses with smaller back gardens and limited attic space, a storage unit is simply an extension of the home: somewhere to keep the things you need but don’t need every day.
Getting to Stow: N4, M50 and Ninth Lock Road

Our address is Unit A1, Oakfield Industrial Estate, 4 Ninth Lock Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, D22 XD28. Ninth Lock Road runs out from Clondalkin village, and we’re a few minutes from the village centre with parking directly outside.
- From the N4 (Lucan, Palmerstown, Liffey Valley): exit at Liffey Valley and come south via the Fonthill Road into Clondalkin, then follow signs for the village and Ninth Lock Road.

- By train: Clondalkin/Fonthill station on the Heuston to Kildare line is nearby, which is handy if you’re dropping into your unit without a car.
As always, check a live map before setting off with a full van, as traffic around Liffey Valley and on the N4 can be heavy at peak times.
What do people in Lucan, Palmerstown and Ballyfermot store?
We see a real mix of reasons, but these come up again and again:
- Moving house. Storing furniture in the gap between selling and buying, or between leases. See our guide to storing your stuff during a move.
- Renovations and extensions. Clearing rooms so builders can get in. Our article on where to put your furniture during renovation works covers this in detail.
- Making room for a home office. Turning the spare room or box room into a workspace means the contents have to go somewhere.
- Seasonal items. Garden furniture, BBQs, bikes, camping gear, Christmas decorations and summer or winter wardrobes.
- Family changes. Adult children moving home, a parent moving in, or a parent downsizing and wanting to keep family furniture.
- Small businesses and trades. Stock, tools, equipment and archive boxes. Tradespeople in particular like having somewhere to keep tools out of the van overnight. Read more in our guide to tool storage for tradespeople in West Dublin.
Why Clondalkin makes sense for West Dublin
Choosing storage close to home is about more than convenience. When your unit is 10 minutes away rather than 40, you’ll actually use it: popping in for the winter coats, swapping stock, collecting the camping gear on a Friday evening. You’ll also spend less on van hire and fuel on moving day.
Clondalkin’s location between the N4 and the N7, just west of the M50, means it works for a wide catchment: Lucan, Palmerstown, Ballyfermot, Cherry Orchard, Chapelizod, Liffey Valley, Adamstown, Clonburris, Bawnogue, Neilstown, Rowlagh and Clondalkin itself.

Choosing the right unit size
The most common mistake is booking too big. A few rough pointers:
- Small: boxes, suitcases, a couple of bikes, seasonal items
- Medium: the contents of a one-bed apartment
- Large: the contents of a two- to three-bed house
- Extra-large: a bigger family home, or business stock and equipment
